Five facts about cork flooring

Cork flooring is getting a lot of attention these days, and that is because it has both a unique beauty AND it’s good for the planet, being renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable.

It comes from the corkoak tree, but only the bark is harvested and it gets replenished easily, with harvesting being allowed every nine years.

Interesting fact: It might also help decrease global warming, because every time the bark is harvested, the tree it absorbs even more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. While all of these trees soak up CO2; a tree that is often harvested can store up to five times the amount of unharvested ones.

Benefits of cork floors

Besides its beauty and sustainability, there are other reasons you might want to include it in your home, including:

  1. Refinishing. Just like hardwood, cork can be sanded down and restained. It can be done several times, depending on thickness.
  2. Comfort. The cork has a softness and cushion-like quality and is especially good in rooms where you’ll stand for long periods of time, such as the kitchen. It also provides a “soft fall,” important if you have running kids or elderly residents who are prone to falls.
  3. Providing insulation for both sound and heat. There are many small air-filled pockets that act as barriers to keep noise and echoes from bouncing all over walls and floors. It also holds cool or hot in a room which might help you save on energy bills.
  4. Easy to keep completely clean. It has antimicrobial properties so it naturally repels insects and other critters, as well as dust, hair, and other small particles. As a result, indoor air quality and a healthy environment are improved.
  5. Easy to care for. It does need several coats of a water barrier sealer but, after that, you just need to sweep or vacuum. Wipe spills immediately, though, to prevent staining.

This flooring comes in both sheet and tile forms. Tiles, especially, can be a good DIY project, as most already have a self-adhesive backing. Just be sure to use several coats of a high quality sealer.
